There is one last task you’ll want to perform before firing up your favorite movies, however: Trueplay Tuning. Other than this there’s not much else to the setup, it’s a relatively painless process (especially if you already have a Sonos account). Then, you'll need to follow a couple of prompts to connect the TV to Wi-Fi, any audio streaming or internet radio services you may already be signed up to, and your choice of Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. After the initial plug in, you’re asked to download the app from the App store or Google Play Store (if you don’t already have it). Much like everything else with the Arc, the setup process is designed to be as simple as possible, all done through the new Sonos S2 smartphone app. The setup process is designed to be as simple as possible, all done through the Sonos S2 smartphone app. To see if your other current components are Atmos-ready check out our Dolby Atmos explainer. Dolby Atmos still isn't ubiquitous in terms of availability so making sure you have all the right bits can be a bit of a process. While there is a Digital Optical converter included with the Arc, Atmos can only be carried over HDMI so by connecting it you’ll be sacrificing top quality sound. There’s two rear reinforced holes to wall mount the 13.78 lb (6.25 kg) unit for a forward facing mounting setup, but naturally the bass response is a little more concentrated when it can reflect off a tabletop surface. There is a simple status LED light that self-adjusts brightness according to ambient light and the subtle capacitive play/pause, volume and mute buttons help it blend into the background. At 45-inches (114.17cm) wide it’ll line up roughly with the edges of the average 55-inch TV, and its scale makes it suitable for anything up to 85 inches. But the built in IR repeater means it won’t block your remote connection, and this extra headroom gives a little more space to the upward firing Atmos drivers. The soundbar sits a little higher than most at 3.4-inches (8.7cm), and this can be a problem with TVs that sit very low on their stands. The Arc is intended to bounce audio off the roof and walls of your room. However, not everyone wants all those boxes, even when they're wireless, and when it comes to all-in-one soundbars, the Arc is good value compared to competition such as the Sony HT-A7000. You can get something like the Samsung HW-Q930B, with sub and rear speakers included, for around the same price as the Sonos Arc alone. The Arc has been designed to sit on the tabletop beneath your TV, but you can also mount it below a screen using the Sonos Arc compatible wall mount ($79 / £79 / AU$99).Ī lot has happened in soundbar world since the Sonos Arc's release, and it's price looks a little on the high side if you just want big home theater sound. These speakers have also increased in price since their launch. While this Atmos-enabled speaker is perfectly capable on its own, you can also add the Sonos Sub (Gen 3) for $749 / £749 / AU$1099 for huge bass upgrage, or a Sonos Sub Mini ($429 / £429 / AU$699) for a smaller bass boost. To begin with, despite bringing a dog back to life - an extraordinary achievement - no one in Frank’s team appears appreciably amazed, nor do they seem all that concerned that the pooch starts exhibiting incredibly aggressive behaviour. The film’s real problem, though, is that it repeatedly puts the characters into dangerous situations they should be smart enough to avoid. ( The Lazarus Effect bears a 2013 copyright, so presumably it was dreamed up before Luc Besson’s 2014 feature Lucy, which concerned a young woman who, like Zoe, suddenly has superpowers because of advanced neural activities.) (Presumably, that’s why audience members are buying tickets in the first place.) But Gelb (who previously made the documentary Jiro Dreams Of Sushi) and screenwriters Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater don’t do much to enliven a familiar setup, drawing from Frankenstein, Flatliners and others. ![]() No one in the audience will be shocked that the reanimation of Zoe doesn’t go smoothly. Not willing to let her go, Frank decides to use the serum on his fiancée, with disastrous results. Defying their bosses, Frank and Zoe and the rest of their team (Donald Glover, Evan Peters and Sarah Bolger) decide to do one more experiment, which leaves Zoe dead from an accidental electrocution. After having success bringing back to life a dead dog, they discover that the university is shutting down their work - and that a mysterious corporation will be seizing their intellectual property. In The Lazarus Effect, Frank (Duplass) and Zoe (Wilde) are engaged, but their wedding has been delayed by their research into a serum that can reanimate the deceased. Expect reviews to be dismissive and word of mouth to be tepid. However, since the film is only rated PG-13, it’ll be able to cater to a larger audience than if it had received a restrictive R rating. Opening in the US on February 27, The Lazarus Effect is the only horror movie in sight, but without a lot of marquee names in the cast, this Relativity release should probably keep commercial expectations in check. Playing the long-frustrated Zoe, who wants to get on with her and Frank’s life together, the actress flashes some demonic glee once her character is reanimated. The most nuanced performance comes from Wilde. Those pluses only increase the frustrations, however: Why play down to the basest tenets of a genre when it’s clear the filmmaking aspires to something smarter? The feature directorial debut of David Gelb is elegantly shot and sports an impressive cast for a horror entry, including Mark Duplass and Olivia Wilde. For a movie populated with brilliant scientists, this cautionary tale about trying to raise the dead is consistently undone by incredibly boneheaded decisions, which conveniently raise the stakes and artificially increase the suspense. But in The Lazarus Effect, arrogance isn’t the problem - it’s simple stupidity. In horror stories, it’s customary for characters who want to play God to be undone by their own arrogance. ![]() ![]() They should be long enough to allow the jump starter to be placed securely on the ground. Live is considered kind of “unique” among DAWs, as it can double as a tool for composing and recording, as well as a live instrument. As such, its user interface is nicely designed, if a tad outdated (not a big deal in this case – it still looks good!). Its layout is traditional, emulating the layout of analog consoles. It has an award-winning UI, allows you to create unlimited tracks (audio, MIDI, instrument, loop, and auxiliary tracks), and in BandLab’s own words it features the “best audio engine,” along with VST3, Touch, and other leading technologies. It’s nice to have a selection of built-in effects and instruments, but we all like being able to play with our favorite plugins, am I right? Waveform plays well with most VSTs, so add away! That’s probably the way it was meant to be used anyway. As a long-time user of the DAW, that’s always a nice thing to see. These are a little “basic” so far as effects are concerned, but Tracktion has been continually updating these with user-friendly graphical interfaces that make them more usable. Tracktion or Waveform has always had some built-in effects (like EQ, reverb, delay, and so on). That said, Waveform is somewhat customizable (if you upgrade to PRO, you can do more customization). How the controls are positioned are part of the workflow, so that’s going to come down to preference. It’s dark themed, which can make it a little easier on the eyes during long studio sessions. Waveform’s graphical user interface is attractive if simple. It feels like software that’s been developed to be software. Because Waveform doesn’t feel like a piece of software trying to emulate hardware. ![]() ![]() If the workflow isn’t for you, that’s okay, there are other more traditional DAWs on this list you will likely find a lot of utility in. It makes it easy for me to get started, get going, and take my project idea from start to finish quickly. What I like most about the DAW, and what some might find odd, is the workflow. Over the years, I’ve recorded acoustic duos, reggae bands, rock bands, podcasts, audiobooks, and other projects using Waveform. And while some might try to tell you that it’s best for electronic music and EDM (and it is good for that), you can honestly do anything with it. What this means is that Waveform has had plenty of time to mature. At the time, Tracktion software was owned by Mackie. Waveform was originally Tracktion, and Tracktion was a DAW all its own before it became a developer. Waveform Free is one of my personal favorites and is easily one of our top picks for this list. ![]() The dropping of the "tri-state" identifier reflected a desire to brand the school as a nationally competitive private university, not to be mistaken for state-funded or associated with businesses or organizations nationwide also using the term "tri-state".
